It’s easy to forget that humans aren’t really meant to spend all of our time indoors. Essentially, we’re animals, and, as such, our lives were once entirely spent outdoors. We’ve come a long way since then, but perhaps we’ve started overlooking an essential part of our well-being.
Recent studies have suggested that this isn’t the best system for us — spending time in the outdoors can keep us fit, and, perhaps more importantly, give our mental health a boost. But how can you get more nature into your life? We take a look at a few ways how below.
One of the simplest ways to spend more time outdoors is to simply commit to doing so. If we let life run on autopilot, then we’ll naturally find that we spend our time indoors. Even if we make a loose plan to visit the woods at the weekend, something else is likely to come up that makes us abandon the plan. As such, it’s important to stick to your plans. If you say you’re going to spend two hours a week in nature (which is enough), you’ll slowly make it part of your lifestyle.
A lot of people have a vague sense that they’d like to spend more time in the outdoors, but there’s a problem: they don’t know where or how to do it. Unless you’ve grown up with nature or you have friends or family who are interested, it can be tough to know where to start. One way to get around this lack of knowledge is to look at volunteering in the outdoors. There will likely be an eco-village somewhere close to your home that could do with some helpers at the weekend. You can go down and help out for a few hours, all the while getting your fill of nature.
consider a move
One of the reasons why so many people have so little nature in their life is because they live in a city, a concrete jungle that has squeezed nature aside. But there are other options out there; no law says you have to live in a metropolitan area. If you’ve grown tired of city-life because of the lack of nature, take a look at buying some land from Wyndham Ridge, and move into the country. You’ll easily get your fill of outdoor times if it’s surrounding your home.
do something different
There are plenty of fun activities you can do in the great outdoors. It’s all about finding the one that you like. This could be hiking, cycling, skiing, or surfing. You’ll be getting all the goodness of the outdoors without even realizing it, since you’ll be having so much fun.
