I’m sure many people will agree that January is one of the most looked-forward-to months of the year.
It’s a time of new beginnings. A time to embrace your dreams and start planning for the year to come. It’s your opportunity to wipe the slate clean and start new. There’s an awakening that starts to happen at the end of every year. We start to think of all the things we want to leave behind and what we want to embrace.
Here are 4 things you want to do this month to jumpstart 2018
#What are your big picture goals?
While I’m a firm believer in setting goals for every area of your life, you don’t have to subscribe to this same belief. In fact, you should aim to prioritize the areas of your life that you feel the most moved to change or improve. It’s important that you are thorough and specific.
The primary goal is execution.
If you’re having a hard time coming up with your goals for the new year, consider creating a vision board or implementing the Vision Book. At least one of your goals should be something that scares you!
Don’t play it safe!
Push yourself this year, past your fears and insecurities.
#Make your goals manageable
If one of your goals is debt freedom… it’s a great goal to have, but it’s vague and general. Instead, break this larger goal into manageable goals like paying off your credit cards or creating additional income through a side hustle.
Now that you’ve broken down your primary goal – of total debt freedom – into smaller more manageable goals —grab your calendar. Decide how much you pay down each month or pay period and write it down. Each month, review your progress. Did you pay down more than you projected because you received a bonus at work? Or maybe you missed one of your additional payment because of an unexpected hardship and need to find a way to get back on track. No matter what, complete a month end review to make sure that you stay on track.
Tip: Set up auto-pay to make sure you stick to your plan.
#Identify what didn’t work in 2017
We all know the definition of insanity – it’s doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result – but what we often don’t acknowledge is that we tend to repeat the same behaviors and habits year end and year out. Don’t take what didn’t work in 2017 into 2018 with you.
Take the time to identify things you keep doing that have never yielded results for you.
Have you been hanging on to a toxic relationship or friendship? Let it go and start creating a tribe that wants to see you when. Are you still working at the same job that you’ve been miserable with for years? Make a decision that 2018 will the year that you do something different and start pursuing work you love. Have you been making the same fitness resolutions for as long as you can remember? It’s time for a change. Instead of focusing on weight loss, make your first quarter goal to take a walk every evening. Once you’ve stayed committed to it push yourself harder with your 2nd quarter goal.
#Make your morning’s count
January is like magic!
We somehow figure out how to implement change and start doing things differently in the first month of the year; No matter how brief our commitment turns out to be. Make a command decision and decide to start waking up earlier each morning – starting January 2nd (because we all know that you’ll be sleeping in on the 1st).
Use the extra time – shoot for an hour – to set the tone for your day. Meditate, workout, journal, say your affirmations, or just enjoy your favorite cup of coffee (or tea) and a good book. The point is for you to have a little me time before the chaos of the world takes over. You’ll be surprised how much of a difference an extra hour makes. You may even find yourself wondering why you hadn’t started sooner.
